AROUND & ABOUTCassington ~ sits at the eastern edge of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds where the River Evenlode joins the Thames. The surrounding area has been continuously inhabited since at least the beginning of the Bronze Age and is rich in archaeological deposits dating back some four thousand years. The remains of an old Roman settlement can still be seen on slightly raised ground in the modern flood plain at the edge of the village. Oxford ~ is just three miles to the East along the A40. Historic Oxford, famous for its ‘Dreaming Spires’, university, museums and the old Covered Market is easily accessible from The Chequers. Woodstock ~ host to Blenheim Palace and the birthplace of Winston Churchill is just four miles to the North. Witney ~ a thriving market town, is four miles west along the A40. The Cotswolds ~ is close by, and just along the A40 you will find the delightful old market town of Burford and Cotswold Wildlife Park, and beyond is Stow-on-the-Wold, Moreton-in-the-Marsh and Bourton-on-the-Water all located in the stunning Cotswolds. -
